Late August saw the final departure of Honeywell's storied Convair (CV) 580 flying testbed from the company's Sky Harbor airport facility in Phoenix, marking the end of a 27-year association with the aerospace company and a career that included a key role in the evolution of some of the industry's most important safety avionics developments.Acquired in 1992 by Honeywell heritage company Allied-Signal, the aircraft was used to develop, test and certify wind shear warning systems, the enhanced ground proximity warning system (EGPWS), the traffic a!ert and collision avoidance system and various weather radars. It also played a part in testing data links, receivers, radar altimeters and the company's Runway Awareness and Advisory System-the forerunner of Honeywell's SmartRunway/SmartLanding system.
