This latest rush to lunar exploration (April 22-May 5, p. 27) is reminiscent of the post-Sputnik launch, but you have to wonder what event triggered it. President Donald Trump's election is not the likely catalyst. Could it be that China is further along with space plans than our administration admits? I hope you address why Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg continues to be so defensive in response to suggestions that lapses in Boeing's engineering and/or certification process could be causal factors in the two fatal 737 MAX 8 crashes. Clearly, the system-safety assessment part of the certification process was wanting. Relying on a single-thread an-gle-of-attack (AOA) sensor and inadequate Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) control laws are design flaws at the heart of the new software improvements. Boeing's board has created a committee to review how the jet maker designs and develops its new airplanes, but based on Muilenburg's public statements, he has made up his mind ahead of this investigation.
