The reengining concept proved enormously successful for Airbus with the A320neo, generating massive demand almost immediately because of the aircraft's much lower fuel burn. This led to the idea that the A330 could benefit from a similar transformation, and operators, including Delta Air Lines, pushed the manufacturer to develop an A330neo. But the result is more than just a power transplant. The twinjet now has a dedicated wing for the first time, not compromised by the requirements of its four-engine sister, the A340. The A330neo also comes with a new cabin and cockpit features that improve the pilot's workspace. Airbus launched the program in July 2014. Airlines and lessors have placed 230 firm orders for the A330-900 and only eight for the smaller -800. The A330-900 replaces the A330-300 and the shorter -800 replaces the A330-200. The fuselage lengths and tail heights are unchanged from their respective predecessors.
