A six-month study of the drone threat by senior airport, air traffic control and security experts has come to an unsurprising conclusion: Governments should do more to help airports deal with rogue drones."Without a robust federal role, an unacceptable security gap will continue to exist at many airports across the U.S. and Canada," says the Blue Ribbon Task Force on Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Mitigation at Airports in a final report released on Oct. 2. The group calls on the U.S. Congress to provide the FAA with the resources to take a lead role in monitoring drones around airports. There also is an urgent need, it says, for the FAA and Transport Canada to establish detection system standards to guide airports seeking to test or acquire such systems.
