Mitsubishi Heavy Industries hopes to begin developing an upgrade for the H3 medium space launcher in 2022, only a year after the first flight, with the aim of driving payload up and unit costs down. Volume available for the payload will rise by more than one-third, and mass capability of the maximum version by as much as 25%. Looking further out, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) proposes using the upgraded H3 and an even more powerful H3 Heavy version for lunar supply missions. H3 Heavy would have side-mounted boosters based on the design of the core first stage.
