Keeping with tradition, Euro-fighter nations were leaving it late to decide whether, after all, the four partner air forces would formally receive their first production aircraft at the end of this month. National armament directors from Germany, Italy, Spain and the U.K. met June 6, but proved unable to finalize the proposed June 30 formal handover date to the air forces. A further meeting has been scheduled within the next few days to try to resolve the landmark date. Continuing the long-worn theme of occasionally testy relations among the partners, opinion has been divided as to whether to opt for the June 30 target. Rome apparently is slightly uncomfortable with the notion of receiving its first Typhoon and its first interim air-defense platform, the F-16, in the same month.
