Despite an overall positive assessment of how space systems supported U.S. and allied troops during the war against Iraq, U.S. military officials are quickly identifying areas that require serious attention or could result in significant problems in future conflicts. Bandwidth availability, in particular, is one area that clearly illustrates the U.S. military's progress and impending challenge. The Iraqi campaign was "the first time when bandwidth was not a constraint," noted Rear Adm. Nancy Brown, the joint staff's vice director for command, control, communications and computers. Compared with the 1991 Persian Gulf war, available bandwidth increased 300-fold while having to support only about half the number of troops. About 80% of that bandwidth was provided by commercial systems.
