The Flight Safety Foundation has launched a new initiative designed to slash the number of ramp-based accidents and incidents involving airline and other aircraft, and plans to release key recommendations in 2004. According to the FSF, the severity of these accidents and incidents can vary widely from a minor dent in a fuselage caused by a wayward baggage cart, to major structural damage and injury to ground personnel. The cost of these incidents to the airlines and general aviation operators can be staggering, according to Robert H. Vandel, FSF executive vice president. "We know that ramp damage is avoidable, [but] we do not know the magnitude of the problem yet" on a global scale, he said.
