摘要

Hoping to cut costs by A$l billion ($666 million) over the next two years, Qantas is establishing stand-alone business units for its domestic and international flight operations, maintenance and engineering activities, and catering, cargo and holiday package activities. Last week, the carrier reported a net profit of A$343.5 million for the fiscal year ended June 30. That was a nearly 20% drop from last year's A$428-mil-lion profit and reflected higher labor, pension and fuel costs, as well as the extraordinary combined impact of passenger declines due to terrorism, the Iraq war and the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) pneumonia-like virus that hit Asia, particularly in April and May. The fallout from these events has made it difficult for the carrier to plan, Qantas Chairman Margaret Jackson said. However, the reorganization is an effort to do just that.
