Having already fielded an antiar-mor weapon for use on the Hunter unmanned aircraft, the U.S. Army next month is slated to receive an upgraded version that expands the types of targets and increases the accuracy with which forces can attack adversaries using the UAV. Following two test series during which Northrop Grumman demonstrated the use of a laser-guided version of the BAT (Brilliant Anti-Tank) weapon, the company is now trying to rapidly produce 25 more rounds to deliver to the Army in October, says William H. Forster, vice president for Land Combat Systems. The company also is in discussions with the U.S. Marine Corps and Air Force for use of the new munition, called Viper, on other manned and unmanned systems. The initiative coincides with Army plans to buy more Hunter UAVs. The service's in-ventory has depleted to fewer than 40 aircraft, an Army official noted. All Hunters are currently deployed, putting additional strain on the small fleet.
