Europe's aviation industry has set out a long-term road map to become carbon-neutral by 2050, a sign that the COVID-19 pandemic and increased environmental scrutiny for the sector has spurred it to action- even as some do not consider the plans ambitious enough. The coronavirus crisis and its devastating effect on travel has shone a spotlight on the airline industry's contribution to climate change. Reducing emissions from aviation had already been identified as a key tool in the broader European Green Deal sustainability drive, and the new Destination 2050 plan comes as European lawmakers are addressing different aspects of the aviation sustainability challenge. The European Commission (EC) last month launched a new partnership that will build on Clean Sky 2 and contribute to a new breed of regional, short- and medium-haul aircraft that will be flying by 2035.
