Europe's civil aeronautical industry is growing impatient about the launch of the Partnership for Clean Aviation, a follow-on program to the ongoing Clean Sky 2 research and technology project for more environmentally sustainable air transport. That widespread sentiment signals a willingness to proceed with an ambitious-and perhaps risky-road map. The industry is betting on breakthrough technologies to revolutionize aviation and make air transport compatible with the Paris Agreement. The European Commission's (EC) proposal on the partnership is still under discussion, so the program will be postponed by at least a few months. To achieve climate goals, however, the service entry deadline for aircraft that emit virtually no CO_2 is 2035. OEMs insist that the expected development cycles imply that work must begin now.
