Efforts to bring autonomy to aircraft cockpits are picking up pace. Startup Merlin Labs has emerged from stealth mode with a contract from special-mission operator Dynamic Aviation to modify 55 Beechcraft King Airs for autonomous operation. The first aircraft is undergoing flight tests in Mojave, California. Founded in 2018, Boston-based Merlin has also raised $25 million in funding, led by Google Ventures and First Round Capital. "The King Air is flying autonomously in the Mojave Desert with no one in the left seat, and we have demonstrated that with three aircraft types and two more in the pipeline," says Matthew George, Merlin co-founder and CEO.
