The FAA formally announced the entry into service of its Space Data Integrator (SDI), a system that enables controllers to track launch and reentry vehicles in near real time as they transition through the airspace. Under development by the FAA since 2015 and still described by the agency as a prototype, the SDI ingests telemetry data provided by launch operators during their missions and feeds it into the agency's Traffic Flow Management System (TFMS) for display to traffic-management coordinators. Combined with time-based launch procedures and dynamic launch windows-practices the FAA has implemented in the last year-the SDI is expected to help reduce both the volume of airspace closed and the duration of its closure to protect other aircraft during launches and reentries.
