The future of Air Liberte, Air Littoral and AOM, three French airlines jointly owned by the SAirGroup and the French Tai-bout Antibes group, is threatened by massive losses and a consolidation plan that appears to be destined for failure. If the ailing airline group is abandoned by its owners, the map of the French airline industry would alter dramatically, giving Air France an unacceptable near-monopoly on the country's domestic route system. This scenario would underscore some inconsistencies in the European Commission's (EC) air transportation policy. For example, the EG repeatedly claimed that too many European airlines compete in a highly fragmented market, but policy makers, nevertheless, suspect that "dominant positions" could arise from mergers.
