The Pentagon is taking another stab at trying to intercept ballistic missiles from space with kinetic kill interceptors, reviving a concept President Clinton killed in his first year in office. The space-based hit-to-kill program being initiated with funding requested in the Fiscal 2002 budget is supposed to serve initially to assess what technology is available for such a system, with the goal in the mid-term of putting together an in-orbit experiment by 2005-06. The question being asked now is, "What is the art of the possible?" a senior defense official said.
