Long before Boeing became involved in the Exostar e-marketplace, it was thinking of ways to buy supplies over the Internet. In fact, it was thinking that way before its McDonnell Douglas and Rockwell mergers. And so were they. The rise of Exostar, the big Internet portal that Boeing owns with BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and Rolls-Royce, has overshadowed the company's earlier work to develop a non-production procurement system. Dubbed "Spin," that system put Boeing on the path to Exostar's use of the Internet to reap dividends in improved buying efficiency.
