Independent maintenance, repair and overhaul companies may not survive the current downturn in the global airline business unless they can reinvent themselves to find new opportunities in the increasingly competitive MRO market, industry observers predicted. The number of independents involved in aftermarket activities has shrunk in recent years, in large part because original equipment manufacturers have recognized the revenue potential in servicing equipment they've sold. The decline in the business base for the remaining organizations, many of which focus on engines, may be exacerbated as airlines cut costs during the current recessionary business climate, MRO executives said here at an Aviation Week & Space Technology conference.
