Airlines indicate that Airbus' leadership with the A340-500/600 could evaporate. Despite conceding Airbus a two-year lead, Boeing could equal the European consortium's order book for the A340-500/600 within two months of the formal introduction of its 777-200X and -300X program. The Seattle manufacturer has identified up to 114 orders from nine airlines for the 777-derivative program launched Feb. 29 (AW&ST Mar. 6, p. 39). First deliveries are expected in September 2003. Five carriers—Malaysia Airlines, Japan Airlines (JAL), All Nippon Airways (ANA), Emirates and EVA Airways—have said they favor the 777, which would account for 49 orders. A second group—Qantas, Cathay Pacific, Air France and Singapore Airlines (SIA)—are regarded as close to firming up 65 orders.
