The "common missile warning system," which the Pentagon hoped would be deployed on many different types of U.S. aircraft to protect against surface-fired heat-seeking missiles, has fallen far short of these expectations. In early 1995, USAF-Navy plans to develop a missile warning system suitable for their fighter aircraft were terminated. Instead, the Pentagon decided that the MWS being developed as a major subsystem of the Army's Advanced Tactical Infrared Countermeasures (ATIRCM) system by Lockheed Martin/Sanders should also serve as a stand-alone MWS for a variety of other aircraft types.
