Anticipating an explosion in the number of unmanned aircraft operated by the U.S. military, senior Pentagon and FAA officials have ordered a Defense Dept. study of how these vehicles should be integrated into national airspace (NAS) where airliners packed with people also operate. While the study is just getting underway (with a contractor to be selected within the next 60 days), Pentagon and FAA planners believe that if they can formulate an effective policy for unmanned air vehicles' (UAVs) use of national airspace, then operational techniques can be validated by the military in exercises and training flights over the next few years.
