Using airplanes to teach recovery from severe upsets is atypical and moves this crucial training from the classroom to the sky The need to provide pilots with flight-based training in unexpected "upset" scenarios has spurred Aviation Safety Training to create its Advanced Maneuvering Program that teaches pilots of all skill levels how to recognize, react to and recover from a sudden loss of control in flight. Although upset training is addressed by the airlines through simulator programs, loss of control in flight (Locif) remains a serious safety issue, according to Donald Wylie, chief pilot for Aviation Safety Training, based at David Wayne Hooks Memorial Airport near Houston.
