Eurocontrol is entering a key phase of the Single European Sky (SES) initiative as ATC organizations and facilities are evaluated against common standards. The first ATC facility in Europe to meet these new requirements governs air traffic over four nations from its location in the Netherlands. Having controllers at facilities and air navigation service providers (ANSPs) follow the same processes and procedures across Europe is considered key to making the transition to a more integrated continent-wide system—SES. Not surprisingly, the first (and as yet only) multinational ATC center in Europe—the Maastricht Upper Area Control Center—established three decades ago, has qualified.
