摘要

If reduced vertical separation over the U.S. lives up to its long-awaited promises—as expected when the FAA puts it into effect on Jan. 20—it will help airlines save hundreds of millions of dollars in fuel costs in the first year and make it easier to elude thunderstorms and avoid turbulence. The Domestic Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (DRVSM) program is costing about $869 million, mostly for operators who have to equip their aircraft with avionics. But the initiative is expected to save nearly $400 million in fuel and operational efficiency during the first year and more than $5.3 billion over the next decade. This 6-to-1 ratio of benefit to costs was calculated when jet fuel was just 67 cents a gallon. Since then, fuel costs have soared, selling at about $1.20 last week, and savings from DRVSM could easily be much greater if the price of jet fuel remains at high levels.
