Investigators are scouring aircraft-performance and systems data, radar tracks and operational records for clues to what on-board emergency spurred the 16,300-ft. plunge that preceded EgyptAir Flight 990's crash into the Atlantic Ocean. "You have to assume this was an emergency," said one official deeply involved in the National Transportation Safety Board's investigation of that Oct. 31 crash, which killed all 217 on board the 767-336ER. "Why else would the airplane nose over and get into a dive like that during what otherwise appears to have been a normal flight?"
