Boeing wants to stretch conventional wisdom about the techniques and technologies of aircraft manufacturing in its development of the 787. When asked what attracted All Nippon Airways to become its launch customer, President and CEO Yoji Ohashi doesn't talk bottom-line price. He sounds the long-term technology value theme Boeing has been emphasizing—bleed-less engines for improved efficiencies, a composite fuselage that cuts weight, reduces structural fatigue and gives passengers bigger windows and a healthier flying environment. The ANA engineering staff's favorable evaluation "was directly tied with the efficiency aspect."
