An International Civil Aviation Organization effort to curb runway incursions on a global scale is gaining momentum as the FAA puts the finishing touches on a computer-based model that will allow all incidents to be classified in terms of severity (A, B, C or D) automatically. The top runway incursion officials at Eurocontrol and the FAA say this tool will be key to achieving consistent results between nations in classifying these incidents, which are considered one of the leading hazards in civil aviation. Eurocontrol, the FAA and Airservices Australia are members of an IGAO working group that has been attacking the problem for several years.
