A Montreal-area company has launched a line of commercial aircraft simulators to serve the needs of small, low-cost airlines (10-30 jets). The idea is to exploit the latest in microprocessor and software technology along with commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) imaging and actuation systems to reduce the cost of purchasing, operating and maintaining a simulator, says Mechtronix Systems President Xavier-Henri Herve. The company was formed in 1987 by a small group of engineering students at Concordia, a local university, and now has several hundred employees in the company and its affiliates. Herve explains that most Level D-class simulators in use today cost about $12 million, and can handle all types of simulation to provide initial and recurrent pilot training. This includes a fidelity high enough to match the performance of an aircraft so a pilot could receive his entire training in a simulator. The first flight in an actual aircraft could occur on an airliner on revenue service. Achieving this level of fidelity requires a Cadillac of simulators, he says.
