It has been recognised that the Crossrail scheme is vitally important for relieving London's creaking public transport infrastructure. However, as the Crossrail Bill goes to select committee, communities are worried about the effects that such a massive long-term scheme will have on them. In the East End tempers have flared, most notably in the prominently minority ethnic area surrounding the 'Banglatown' of Bethnal Green in Tower Hamlets. Crossrail will involve a ventilation shaft on Brick Lane. Local business groups are worried that work on the shaft will take time, blocking access to the local shops and restaurants for which the area is renowned. There is little doubt that it will prove an influence on voting in May's local elections.
