摘要

To date, over one-fifth of all U.S. higher education students are now taking at least one online course. The Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C) recently surveyed more than 2,500 colleges and universities to reveal that over 39 million students were taking at least one online course during the 2007 fall term. This number is a 12 percent increase from fall 2006 (Allen and Seaman 2008, 5). Of these colleges and universities that offered programs in psychology and the social sciences, approximately 30 percent of the programs were fully online (Allen and Seaman 2008, 13). These staggering numbers might explain why librarians have recently been feeling a second big push to have a more active online presence in order to connect with and serve their online patrons.
