On behalf of The New York Public Library's Board of Trustees, I am delighted to welcome the delegates, observers, and distinguished guests of this extraordinary Summit of World Library Leaders. As you all know, our library is celebrating its Centennial this year. But I suspect that the activities of this single week will rank as some of the most important in the entire 100-year history of our library. Two days ago, we inaugurated our spectacular new Science, Industry and Business Library (SIBL). Today we open our first summit of library leaders from throughout the world, bringing together the heads of fifty of the most important libraries in the world - on five continents and in twenty-seven different countries.
