"Engineering the co-factor interface" and "Novel enzymes - Frontiers in discovery and improvement", were Symposia held during the 11th European Congress on Biotechnology (ECB11), 24-29 August 2003, Basel, Switzerland. These two symposia were organized by the Section of Applied Biocatalysis (ESAB) of the European Federation of Biotechnology in order to present an up-to-date overview of these topics which are of great importance for the future development of enzymes and enzyme process technology. The interest in using enzymatic transformations in industrial processes continues to grow very rapidly. Approximately 70% of all known enzymes depend on coenzymes or cofactors to be catalytically active. It is now a well-established fact that cofactor-dependent oxidoreductase-catalyzed processes can only be successfully utilized on an industrial scale when continuous in situ coenzyme or cofactor regeneration systems are available in a mature form.
