摘要

As the world watches President Obama's struggle to shape the priorities of the Federal budget, Robert Dawson, a well-known California landscape photographer, has found his work at the center of discussions about ways in which the country will plot its economic recovery. In 2010 The University of California Press will publish When Government Worked, his photographic documentation of the still-living history of California's Depression-era public work projects, all of which were accomplished under programs created during the New Deal Presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. In the 1930s, there was 25% unemployment, many parts of the economy were in ruins, and the American democratic spirit was heavily challenged. Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration (WPA), and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), as well as several other agencies, offered the opportunity to invest in the country's physical and cultural infrastructure and to restore faith in and expand democratic and cultural institutions.
