'Our DNA tells us to tell stories,' declared author Tracy Chevalier in her 2012 TED talk. 'And why not apply that to our looking at paintings?' The Girl with the Pearl Earring (1665) by Johannes Vermeer, focus of Chevalier's famous novel, and The Goldfinch (1654) by Carel Fabritius, which plays a key role in Donna Tartt's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same title, are star draws at The Hague's Mauritshuis, a 17th-century townhouse that is the mecca of Dutch Golden Age painting. Now an exhibition The Frick Collection: Art Treasures from New York adds its own layer of stories to Mauritshuis, and represents the growing relationship between the Hague institution and one of America's most celebrated collections of Old Masters.
