DAILY ROUTINES Thelma Block (later Wright) started at the goods shed office in 1940 as a junior clerk, together with Mr Coates who had been transferred at the same time from Parkeston. When she left school at 15, Thelma was keen "to do my duty" and remembers her mother applying to the Ministry of Labour at Cambridge. After successfully taking an exam at Ipswich station, Thelma was appointed by the Commercial Manager there. The Chief Goods Clerk was George Pryke who had previously been goods clerk at Aldeburgh. On reflection, Thelma considers there was some resentment against a young woman entering what had hitherto been a male-dominated environment, a thought reinforced by the fact that although she was booked to start at 8.30 am, because of the train service from Aldeburgh where she lived, she arrived before 8.0, yet despite this was not allowed to leave at a cor- respondingly earlier time. "I thought this was rather mean." However, she remembers Mr Pryke's assistant (whose name escapes her) was very helpful and took a lot of trouble to explain the duties prior to leaving for the services.
