In 2005, KPLU-FM launched the School of Jazz project to engage jazz professionals with public high school jazz bands in western Washington in a mentor-ship program, culminating in the production of a CD. In phase one of the program, each jazz musician practices with and coaches a school jazz band. Phase two unites jazz musicians and school bands in the studio to record songs for a CD. The CD is promoted locally and nationally, with the proceeds from the sale benefitting Puget Sound area high school music programs. The School of Jazz recognizes the power of personal mentorship in kids' lives.
