A major shift, underway today, is the trend towards holistic thinking and "solutions" in the application of Smart Grid technologies and away from simply adding "boxes". (A "solution" in this context may be thought of as a set of technology components that are integrated through interoperability to meet the business needs of a utility.) If a utility's priority is to improve the management, optimization, and protection of distribution system assets, for instance, taking a holistic approach to technology investments helps ensure that the desired outcome-the solution-is achieved.
