There is a sense of irony when watching the movie, "The Day After Tomorrow". To a degree, it is that writer's interpretation-or exaggeration-of what might happen if global warming was to end the world. If you were to give the movie's director, Roland Emmerich, the current state of North America's ageing T&D (transmission and distribution) infrastructure, he'd probably come out with all kind of chaos scenarios: loss of power, tipping transmission towers, unstable power lines, electrocutions, and a whole host of other works of fiction that make for a great Hollywood blockbuster. Mr. Emmerich might even cast actor Dennis Quaid to reprise his roll as the lead protagonist, Jack Hall. But, we live in reality and one fact can't be denied: to maintain power system stability, we must address the needs for the present and the future-or face the consequences.
