In spite of what one might be led to believe by the title, Managing Knowledge in the Construction Industry opens with the warning that this is not just another 'how to' book about knowledge management. What instead Alexander Styhre seeks to do is to draw on a broad stream of ideas from social and organizational theory to offer insights into the nature and practices of knowledge in the construction sector. Personally, it was a relief to read this warning. What ensues is a consistently stimulating and theoretically sophisticated series of observations that departs quite significantly from orthodox views on knowledge management. This is a useful contribution, not least because such orthodoxies appear to have taken root in writing on the construction industry while being increasingly challenged in other domains.
