Since Thomas Edison's prophetic statement from the 1930s, sadly too little has been done proactively to resolve the energy crisis, as this book demonstrates. Central to the energy crisis, and the focus of Resilient Cities: Responding to Peak Oil and Climate Change, is the concept of 'peak oil'. This mid-20th-century concept predicted that the production of oil from conventional sources would peak in the late 20th century (Hubbert, 1956). The implications of the 'peak oil' paradigm are manifold, leading to problems for the long-term sustainability of humanity, urbanization, and consumerism across the globe.
