Note that Sudjic is talking here only about conflict regarding completed buildings designed by the architectural profession; he is ignoring all the other less visible but equally dramatic conflicts that were involved in the physical creation of these buildings in the first place, and the multitude of stresses and strains that have been spawned by the modern evolution of the profession itself. When these other conflicts are piled on top of the public controversies about architectural practices, then one has an unholy mess. The academic community has taken up part of the job of unravelling the various threads of this mess, and in particular it has seen moral philosophers begin to step down from their (controversially designed?) ivory towers to begin to apply their theories of ethical analysis to practical problems in the professions.
