Birkeland has created a book that is valuable and deserves to find a place within architecture and industrial design school libraries. There is much here that would benefit design students directly. It is user friendly and contains contributions from many well-known academics and practitioners in the eco-design field. It is sufficiently well referenced to provide a point of departure for further reading and the 'questions' and 'projects' accompanying each chapter will prove useful to educators. The material presented is so diverse, and from such diverse perspectives, that it will ensure virtually all readers will both be infuriated and delighted by different sections. For an undergraduate text, this is useful because an infuriated student is perhaps second only to an enraptured student (and infinitely preferable to the great mass of the mentally and emotionally disengaged)! The complexity and contradictions within much of the current sustainability debate may be found attractive by students, as well as the evangelical tone. However, the trait that makes the book work as an undergraduate text disqualifies it as the 'Source Book of Integrated Eco-Logical Solutions' that its subtitle proclaims. This book is a source of ideas, of critiques of the current system, even of what is currently considered 'best practice' in many parts of the industry, but this is not the same as a source book of 'integrated eco-logical solutions'. Practitioners looking for solutions, even recent graduates from design schools, are likely to be frustrated. Practitioners looking for solutions would be better advised to subscribe to one of the many best-practice guidance providers in this field.
