They often operate well beyond the school day, and these long hours of operation mean the selection and design of the heating system is critical if it is to produce a satisfactory environment for users while keeping energy costs to a minimum. According to the Scottish Sports Council's Technical Digest 203, Sports Halls Heating and Ventilation, 1995, energy can account for 25-30% of the overall operating cost of a dry sports facility and is often the next largest cost after staff.
