Research Notes: Digital Documentation in Vernacular Architecture Studies

Digital technology is not a one-to-one replacement for rigorous on-site architectural analysis and traditional documentation methodologies. Instead it is a means to push forward and expand, not replace, our methodological toolkit. I do not think that these techniques will bring about the death of analog recording, on the contrary, the use of digital technology in vernacular inquiry further solidifies the need to continue to record buildings and landscapes by hand. As these technologies continue to become embedded into our fieldwork, it is critical for national organizations such as the Vernacular Architecture Forum, along with other academic and professional bodies such as the National Council for Preservation Education, the Association for Preservation Technology International, and the Society of Architectural Historians, in partnership with public entities such as HABS and the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training, to establish a set of best practices for the use of these tools in our work. These discussions should be flexible and dynamic as technologies continue to develop. We also need to think about the ethical and curatorial implications of using this technology and have long-term discussions about protocols for storing digital vernacular data for the scholarly community, stakeholders, and stewards.
