These days, everyone seems to be working on a digital mapping project, and I am no exception. Digital research projects take advantage of technological advances of the past ten years and allow us to ask and answer previously unconceivable questions. Yet the process of executing a digital mapping project can be fraught with unforeseen challenges. Case in point is my multiyear effort to map the households in Newport, Rhode Island, on the eve of the American Revolution.
