'Embodied placemaking' refers to how people, with their bodies and through their bodily experiences of the physical environment, 'produce' spaces, places, and ultimately, urbanity, in the Lefebvrean sense, in which 'it is only through our consciousness, actions, and interactions that the physical landscape is brought into existence' (p. 3). The concept draws on a range of traditions including performance art, material culture and phenomenology, 'embodied placemaking' is put forward as 'a powerful framework in which to understand authorship and ownership of the built environment...' (p. 5). In their editorial, Arijit Sen and Lisa Silverman argue that since 'the role of the human body and its performative and affective engagement' are central to placemaking, 'a study of place that omits consideration of the bodies that engage its terms remains incomplete' (p. 5).
