Resilient Downtowns: A New Approach to Revitalizing Small- and Medium-City Downtowns

This interesting book challenges the dominant 'Main Street' model of revitalization of downtowns by sharing stories of fourteen small-to medium-city downtowns that bounced back from difficulties using a broader framework the author calls 'en-RICHED'. This stands for increasing residential population (R), welcoming immigrants (I), enhancing civic and cultural uses (C), promoting heritage and historic tourism (HE), and enhancing design (D). I have been researching Main Streets for the past six years and Michael Burayidi's construction of what it takes to make a functional downtown resonated strongly with what I have seen. The Main Street programme focuses on the commercial corridor, but Michael Burayidi's model looks at a much larger area. Indeed, this larger emphasis is an exciting shift, reflecting an ecological reality that Main Street is embedded in the downtown and near downtown. All the ideas he has identified are well-supported by the case studies he has assembled, and, in general, might be easily adopted in other places.
