We describe recent developments in so-called 'morphogenetic' or form-generating urban design tools and strategies, and offer a critical assessment of the field's aims, challenges and opportunities. In particular we assess recent efforts to incorporate the generative processes and characteristics of natural systems, examining several representative practitioners and theorists. We raise a strong caution about the dangers of employing avant-garde artistic regimes as drivers of urban planning and design, and we suggest that this results from a common confusion about the origin and role of art within settlements. We conclude with a discussion of opportunities for the further development of what are nonetheless promising new design tools and approaches.
