Thanks to the recent declassification of key government documents, the dimensions of a bitter conflict between Dr. Albert Schweitzer, the famed humanitarian, and the U.S. government are evident for the first time. Albert Schweitzer—distinguished musician, philosopher, theologian—returned in 1924 to the jungles of Lambarene, in French-ruled Gabon, where he had previously developed a hospital. Here, under the most difficult conditions, he worked selflessly as a physician, preaching his own brand of reverence for life. Although Schweitzer was never quite the saint that legend implied, millions of people believed he was.
