Bordered by Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, the Malacca Strait is not only the longest but also one of the most heavily trafficked straits in the world used for international navigation. With a length of approximately 500 nautical miles (over 800 kilometres) and marked by stretches of shallow waters and a number of traffic choke points, it is a navigationally challenging waterway through which an estimated 40 per cent of global trade passes. That amounts to well over 80,000 vessel movements per year, which signifies the economic importance of this maritime artery. These vessel movements include ships in transit in both directions as well as crossing and inshore traffic, and vessels engaged in fishing. The busiest part of the Strait stretches from the Malaysian island of Pulau Sembilan to Tanjung Piai (the most southern end of the Malay peninsula) for a distance of approximately 241 nautical miles. The narrowest passage continues for 22 nautical miles in the South, between Port Dickson (Malaysia) and Tanjung Medang (Indonesia).
